Learn about the remarkable transformation of NE Portland’s Whitaker Ponds from a dump site to a thriving urban oasis on March 7, 11:00 am–12:30 pm with a guided walking tour offered by the Bird Alliance of Oregon. Pam Slaughter, founder of People of Color Outdoors and a nature connection educator, will lead the tour.

This intimate 22-acre urban sanctuary tells a powerful restoration story as you encounter diverse wildlife, from secretive marsh birds and colorful songbirds to turtles, beavers, and the insects that reveal ecosystem health.
Winter is a great time to go birding; waterfowl have arrived en masse, raptors are abundant, and leafless trees make bird spotting much easier. Whether you’re a seasoned birder seeking productive urban hotspots or just beginning to explore nature nearby, you’ll leave with new appreciation for what’s possible when communities invest in accessible wild spaces and the ongoing stewardship that keeps this neighborhood gem thriving
